-Description

Citizen is a Japanese watch manufacturer founded in 1918.

Together with Seiko, it has created the history of Japanese watchmaking.

This "Citizen Chronometer" was produced from 1962 to 1966.

It was the Citizen's flagship model.

It was develeped and launched against the first Grand Seiko released in 1960.

As the name suggests, it was the first Citizen watch to comply with the Swiss Chronometer Inspection Standard of Excellence.

While Seiko produced the movement for the Grand Seiko based on that of the "Crown", Citizen designed and developed the movement for this model.

It can be said that this model is the result of all of Citizen's technology.

In fact, the assembly process differs from a normal factory line, and records show that one craftsman handled the entire production process for one piece.

One craftsman worked on just one watch per day.

This is unusual for a manufacturer of watches as an industrial product.

That's why this  "Chronometer" is a very special model.

It is said that because it was made without regard to profitability, it was sold at a higher price than the Grand Seiko, but made almost no profit when sold.

In addition, because the AGF (gold-plated) models were more popular at the time, there were only a few stainless steel ones left, making them quite rare.

The case is large at 37 mm and the multi-faceted, thick-cut lugs are one of the watch's distinctive features.

The CITIZEN C mark can be seen on the crown.

The caseback of the watch has a gold medallion with an eagle symbol.

This was the first Citizen product to feature an eagle, and the eagle symbol is still used on flagship models today.

The dial is a silver dial with sunray finish.

The details of the hands and indices vary depending on the production period.

This one from 1964 has mountain-shaped dauphine hands and the serial number is engraved on the caseback.

The movement is a manual-wind Cal. 0400.

As mentioned above, it is a specially designed movement manufactured for this model.

The mainspring was powerful, had a power reserve of 53 hours.

It can be said that the reputation as a movement is the best in the Japanese vintage watches.

This watch was purchased from Mr. Yoshihiko Honda a.k.a BQ(@bqwatch) who is leading expert of vintage seiko and citizen watches.

All components and authenticity are checked by him as well.
